Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood are the founding principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Mu Chapter is dedicated to upholding the principles of the organization. Our chapter was chartered by 17 intrepid young women at Claflin University on a April 16, 1946, thus making Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, the first sorority to grace the Claflin University campus.
These women were: Dora Bennett, Louise Crew, Bertha Dash, Edith Hazel, Alma Jenkins, Erma Jones, Reva Salley, Hazel Sparks, Gloria Richardson, Pauline Spears, Dorothy Staley, Albertha Garney, Vivian Middleton, Ada Murphy, Anne Phillips, Zarita Royal, and Eliza Williams
The chapter also had three sponsors: Madge P. Harper, Alease Saxon Greene, and Flora Julia Fordham.
Mu Chapter has brought to the University and the Orangeburg community activities that Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is promoting on the national and international level. Some of our annual projects include: Baby Week, which includes our Stork's Nest Baby Shower, Founder's Day Celebration, Finer Womanhood Week, and a series of Sister-2-Sister bonding programs. Mu also sponsors programs in conjunction with other organizations. Every year, we sponsor March of Dimes Week, "Saving Babies Together" with the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.Today, there are 30 young women that make up the Mu Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. These women are involved in many different fields of academic study, as well as other campus activities, including, the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College, the Pantherettes Womens' Basketball Team, Phi Beta Lambda Business Fraternity, Pre-Alumni Council, Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, Ladies of Essence, Friends of the Earth Club, Clafin University's Volleyball Team, Symphonic Band, the Claflin University Concert Choir, Claflin University's Girls Softball Team, the NAACP, and SIFE (Student In Free Enterprise), and the Student Government Association.
